Fundación Kanarí helps guarantee the school survival and the future welfare of its students. |
In April 2023, I visited a Jesuit friend who teaches in the San Ignacio de Loyola school in the northeast of Haiti. The school is in Bedou, a rural community on the banks of the Kanarí river, 14 km. south of Ouanaminthe, near the border with the Dominican Republic. Most of the school’s 1000 students walk for several kilometers on unpaved roads –rain or shine– to study with joy, passion and discipline. I was moved by the dedication of the students; the nuns of the Company of Mary Our Lady who run the school; of our Jesuit friend; and of the teachers who (on a salary of $3 a day!) provide the best education possible on a meager and unpredictable budget.
